Throughout the tour!

  • Live in a Local Village: Experience authentic village life with A/C-equipped rooms (ceiling fan in cooler months)

Day 1: Cultural Immersion

  • Morning

    • Pickup from train station/airport: Pickup from Gautam or one of his crew. (Please contact Gautam if you are not comfortable on the back of a motorbike and he will arrange other transportation arrangements. See inclusions below.)

  • Afternoon:

    • Play Cricket with the Locals: Join a friendly game of cricket, India’s favourite sport (can get competitive!!)

    • Play with Local Kids: Spend time with children at the Sunny Foundation School.

Day 2: Spiritual and Historical Exploration

  • Morning:

    • Dungeshwari Cave Temple: Visit the caves where Buddha meditated for six years.

  • Afternoon:

    • Great Buddha Statue: Marvel at the 80-foot statue of Buddha in a meditative pose.

    • Explore Local Temples: Visit the Sujata Stupa, Chinese Temple, and Thai Monastery.

  • Evening:

    • Mahabodhi Temple: Reflect and meditate under the Bodhi Tree where Buddha attained enlightenment.

Day 3: Historical and Religious Sites

  • Morning:

    • Visit Rajgir: Explore the site where Buddha delivered many teachings and the birthplace of Jain Tirthankar Munisuvrata

  • Afternoon:

    • Visit Nalanda: Discover the ruins of one of the world’s oldest universities, where Buddha once taught.

  • Evening:

    • Drop off to train station/airport/hotel

SITES YOU'LL VISIT!

Mahabodhi Temple
The Mahabodhi Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most sacred places for Buddhists worldwide. It marks the spot where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree. The temple's ancient architecture, intricate carvings, and the sacred Bodhi Tree itself draw pilgrims and tourists from around the world. The temple complex offers a profound sense of peace and spirituality, making it a must-visit destination in Bodh Gaya.

 

Dungeshwari Cave Temple
Also known as the Mahakala Cave, the Dungeshwari Cave Temple is a sacred site where Lord Buddha is believed to have meditated before attaining enlightenment. The cave offers a tranquil and spiritual atmosphere, with a small temple inside housing statues of Buddha. Pilgrims and visitors come here to reflect on the Buddha's journey and to experience the peace that the cave's secluded setting provides.

Great Buddha Statue in Bodh Gaya
Consecrated by the 14th Dalai Lama on November 18, 1989, the Great Buddha statue was one of the largest in India at the time. It is surrounded by smaller sculptures depicting Buddha’s disciples, and the statue itself is constructed from a combination of sandstone blocks and red granite, standing as a monumental symbol of peace and reverence.

 

Rajgir
Rajgir is an ancient city rich in history and spirituality, once serving as the capital of the Magadha Empire. It is closely associated with both Buddhism and Jainism, as it was frequented by Lord Buddha and Lord Mahavira. The city is surrounded by hills and is known for its hot springs, Vulture's Peak, and the ancient ruins of fortifications. Rajgir's serene environment and historical significance make it a popular destination for pilgrims and history enthusiasts alike.

Nalanda (University Ruins)
The ruins of Nalanda University, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are a testament to one of the world’s oldest centers of higher learning, dating back to the 5th century CE. Once a thriving Buddhist university, Nalanda attracted scholars from all over Asia. Today, the expansive site offers a glimpse into the grandeur of ancient Indian education and architecture, with remnants of lecture halls, stupas, and monasteries that tell the story of its illustrious past.

Royal Bhutan Monastery
A gift from the Kingdom of Bhutan to honor Lord Buddha, this monastery is celebrated for its stunning traditional Bhutanese architecture, adorned with intricate carvings and vivid depictions of Buddha's life. Inside, a magnificent 7-foot gold-plated Buddha statue draws both devotees and visitors. The monastery not only provides a peaceful space for meditation but also symbolizes the deep cultural connection between Bhutan and India.

 

Indosan Nippon Japanese Temple
This Japanese Buddhist temple, built in 1972, is notable for its serene atmosphere, architectural elegance, and detailed woodwork. Its Japanese-style design sets it apart from other structures in the area. The temple offers a peaceful ambiance ideal for meditation, with beautiful Japanese paintings inside that illustrate significant events from Buddha's life.

Metta Buddharam Temple (Silver Temple)
This temple features a striking exterior of stainless steel and decorative mirror mosaics that gleam in the sunlight, showcasing the elegant Thai architectural style. The main floor of the temple is crafted from wood, while the marble-floored meditation room below provides an ideal space for peaceful contemplation. The temple is adorned with numerous handmade sculptures, crafted from a mix of white cement, clay, and epoxy, adding to its unique charm.

Sujata Stupa
Sujata Stupa is a revered site marking the location where Sujata, a local village woman, offered a bowl of rice pudding to Siddhartha Gautama before he attained enlightenment. This act of kindness is said to have provided Buddha the strength to pursue the Middle Path. The stupa, a quiet and serene structure surrounded by lush greenery, stands as a symbol of compassion and the pivotal moment in Buddha's journey to enlightenment.

Chinese Temple
The Chinese Temple in Bodh Gaya is a beautiful blend of Chinese and Indian architectural styles, reflecting the deep cultural ties between the two countries. Built with the support of the Chinese government, the temple features intricate woodwork, traditional Chinese motifs, and serene gardens that create a tranquil atmosphere for visitors. Inside, the temple houses a large statue of Buddha, along with beautiful murals depicting scenes from his life, offering a peaceful environment for meditation and reflection.​

Reclining Buddha Statue in Bodh Gaya
The Reclining Buddha Statue in Bodh Gaya is a serene and impressive depiction of Lord Buddha in a reclining posture, representing his final moments before attaining Mahaparinirvana.
